Data Visualization and Empathy

Jake Harris of the New York Times has written about bringing empathy to data journalism in order to “connect readers to the dots”.

In the piece he describes the struggle to maintain a balance between the production of beautiful graphics and the human angle of the ‘visualisations of violence’ of a bloody day in Baghdad - a perennial and fascinating challenge for all journalists.

Sarah Slobin’s thoughtful piece, ‘What if the Data Visualisation is Actually People’ is also worth reading as she describes the disconnect between the data and the people in her work on Trials for the Wall Street Journal.
