Creating Data Journalists

Paul Bradshaw has sparked a new debate with his piece ‘Is data journalism teaching repeating the same mistakes as online journalism teaching’?

Tutors of journalism with data journalism experience are thin on the ground, and this he says, has led to the development of courses which combine journalism with computer science. It seems that Bradshaw is excited and worried about this in equal measures as he poses a question over whether journalism should be ‘story-led or tool-led’.

‘I don’t have the answers here – only questions. I ask them because I’ve seen many journalists try to learn programming and give up trying to learn programming because, ultimately, if what you want to do is find and tell stories, reading a book on JavaScript or Ruby is not going to give you much satisfaction.’
