SoundCloud was initially established to allow musicians to upload, share and promote their work, but according to Journalism.co.uk, it’s also become a platform for established news agencies to broadcast from.
‘SoundCloud has quickly become one of the best platforms for journalists to share audio stories on the web. Being easy to use, advert free and attracting over 175 million unique users each month, news organisations across the world have flocked to the audio sharing network.’
It’s interesting to compare how different organisations use SoundCloud in different ways. The BBC world service is committed to hourly uploads of sub five minute, largely interview based pieces, while Buzzfeed uses it as a tool to add audio to news stories. The Guardian has separate news channels for podcasts on politics, football and science while the Huffington Post uses it to home 20-40 minute podcasts.
