Neurotech Memory Rig demo at Imperial's Digital Economy 2014

BBC News Labs is working with Imperial College London’s Data Science Institute on Neurotech Feedback loops and big data in Media.

Neurotech Feedback Loops

Today we demonstrated the “OPTIMAL MEMORY RIG” at the Digital Economy 2014 conference at Imperial College London.

This “Rig” uses BBC Archive clips to trigger an emotional reaction in users, and to measure their “fixation” on topics.

The project formally kicked off in October, so we’ve been able to quickly turn-around an impressive prototype in less than 2 months.

Using EEG and Eye Tracking we monitor strength of emotional response, and of concentration “fixation” of our test subjects.

Next Steps

We plan on stepping-up this collaboration between BBC News Labs, BBC Rewind and Imperial College London “Data Science Institute” through to 2017.

Next Phases:

  1. Expand archive collection from 100s into 1000s of clips
  2. Turn-up the machine-driven enrichment
  3. Assemble team to look into Dementia treatment
